Belowground biomass C outweighs soil organic C of perennial energy crops: Insights from a long‐term multispecies trial

چکیده

Abstract The cultivation of perennial energy crops (PECs) couples the production ligno‐cellulosic biomass to provision multiple ecosystem services, such as reduction greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation climate change through carbon (C) sequestration in soil. Though C soil by PECs has been widely studied, contribution their belowground (BGB) influence on nitrogen (N) storage potential received very little attention. In this study, N stocks BGB fractions (plant organs fine roots) were measured for six ( Populus spp. ‘Poplar’, Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Black locust’, Salix ‘Willow’, Arundo donax ‘Giant reed’, Miscanthus × giganteus ‘Miscanthus’ Panicum virgatum ‘Switchgrass’) grown marginal soil, 11 years after establishment. All had a higher organic (SOC) stock total (STN) than arable land top (0–10 cm) layer. same layer, woody highest SOC stock. increase under led increased porosity top‐soil On average, 43% was allocated plant (PBO; i.e. rhizomes herbaceous stump PECs). Giant reed PBO, whereas switchgrass lowest (22.7 vs. 5.9 Mg ha −1 ). contrary, roots. (sum contribution) black locust After PEC cultivation, 68% BGB, 32% SOC.

Age of Soil Organic Matter and Soil Respiration: Radiocarbon Constraints on Belowground C Dynamics

Radiocarbon data from soil organic matter and soil respiration provide powerful constraints for determining carbon dynamics and thereby the magnitude and timing of soil carbon response to global change. In this paper, data from three sites representing well-drained soils in boreal, temperate, and tropical forests are used to illustrate the methods for using radiocarbon to determine the turnover...

Belowground environmental effects of transgenic crops: a soil microbial perspective.

Experimental studies investigated the effects of transgenic crops on the structure, function and diversity of soil and rhizosphere microbial communities playing key roles in belowground environments. Here we review available data on direct, indirect and pleiotropic effects of engineered plants on soil microbiota, considering both the technology and the genetic construct utilized. Plants modifie...

Soil Organic C: N vs. Water-extractable Organic C: N

Traditionally, soil-testing laboratories have used a variety of methods to determine soil organic matter, yet they lack a practical method to predict potential N mineralization/immobilization from soil organic matter. Soils with high microbial activity may experience N immobilization (or reduced net N mineralization), and this issue remains unresolved in how to predict these conditions of net m...

Soil organic C stabilization and thresholds in C saturation

When building soil organic matter (SOM) contents in agricultural production systems, stabilization of both pre-existing as well as added C is important. A laboratory mineralization experiment was conducted over 374 days to evaluate the effect of pre-existing SOM on soil C mineralization after addition of organic matter (OM) using sugar cane. The SOM gradient used here stretched from 21 to 106 g...
